Main engine & Generator engine (M/E & G/E)

It can be said that the diesel engine is one of mankind’s great inventions, its applications are applied in many fields, one of the most important fields and accounting for the majority is engines on ships. In particular, the main engine is the main propulsion device that determines the movement of the ship and the generator plays the role of providing power for most equipment on the ship.

Main Engine (M/E) also known as a marine engine, is the main power source that drives a ship or boat through water. Considered as the heart of any vessel, the main engine of the ship takes the entire load to propel the ship forward. It provides the energy needed to move the vessel forward, and is usually located in the engine room at the bottom or stern of the ship. The ship engine can be powered by different types of fuels such as diesel, gasoline, natural gas, or steam, depending on the design and purpose of the ship. The engine converts the energy from the fuel into mechanical energy that drives a propeller or other propulsion system, which creates the thrust needed to move the ship through the water.

Generator Engine (G/E) has the function of generating electricity to supply electrical equipment on the ship. Because one generator is not enough to supply electric power the minimum generator – sets are three (3), each one having the same power on big ship of various sizes. These generators are called Main Generators and they are installed in Engine Room, usually in a platform aft of the Main Engine. The purpose of ship generators is to supply electricity for lighting in accommodation and every compartment and place according to the needs in both cases, during sailing or in port, for cooking equipment, crew cabins, deck machinery, cargo gear and equipment, … Besides, generator engine also supply electricity in Engine Room, for lighting, power to all Auxiliary machinery motors such as pumps, and heaters, control panels, steering gear, …
